Prime Minister Tarek Rahman has directed the formation of a high-level committee to address the ongoing challenges facing Bangladesh’s textile industry and ensure its sustainable development. The directive was issued during a meeting with a delegation from the Bangladesh Textile Mills Association (BTMA) at the Secretariat on Wednesday.
During the meeting, BTMA leaders highlighted a range of critical issues affecting the textile sector, including rising production costs, energy and power shortages, raw material supply challenges, financing constraints, the need to enhance global competitiveness, and strategies to expand exports. They also emphasized the importance of policy support to strengthen the industry’s capacity, attract new investments, and reinforce Bangladesh’s position in international markets.
The Prime Minister stated that the textile industry is one of the key pillars of the country’s economy and plays a vital role in employment generation and export earnings. He said the proposed high-level committee, comprising representatives from relevant ministries, government agencies, and industry stakeholders, will assess the sector’s current situation and recommend practical solutions to its challenges.
According to the Prime Minister, the committee will prepare recommendations aimed at increasing production, creating more employment opportunities, encouraging investment, and boosting export earnings. The government will review these recommendations and take the necessary policy and administrative measures to support the industry’s continued growth.
He also reaffirmed the government’s commitment to maintaining a business-friendly environment and providing all possible support to the textile sector. The long-term objective, he said, is to build a more competitive, modern, and sustainable textile industry that strengthens Bangladesh’s position in the global market while making an even greater contribution to the national economy.
