The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) has launched a new initiative aimed at attracting foreign investment, strengthening the country’s backward linkage industry, and connecting operational as well as inactive garment factories with fresh capital and advanced technologies.
As part of this initiative, a high-level meeting was held on Tuesday (August 4, 2026) at the BGMEA Complex in Uttara, Dhaka, between BGMEA leaders and a delegation from the Overseas Chinese Association in Bangladesh (OCAB). The discussions focused on expanding Chinese investment in Bangladesh’s ready-made garment (RMG) sector, promoting technology transfer, and exploring opportunities for strategic joint ventures.
The BGMEA delegation was led by President Mahmud Hasan Khan. Other participants from BGMEA included Vice President (Finance) Mizanur Rahman, Directors Shah Raeed Chowdhury, Joardar Mohammad Hosne Komar Alam, and Samiha Azim.
The OCAB delegation included Vice President Lisa Lou, Vice President & Secretary General Vivian Huang, Executive Director Steven Zhang, and Secretary Tina Hu.
During the meeting, the Chinese delegation emphasized that there is growing interest among Chinese companies in investing in Bangladesh’s garment industry, particularly in the upper supply chain and backward linkage sectors. However, many potential investors face challenges in making informed investment decisions due to the lack of reliable and up-to-date information about local factories. They expressed their expectation that BGMEA could play a key role in facilitating access to such information.
To support this process, BGMEA has decided to collect detailed information from its member factories. Factory owners who are interested in bringing in foreign investment, establishing joint ventures, or transferring full or partial ownership to strategic partners will be invited to submit information regarding their factories, including infrastructure, machinery, production capacity, current operational status, and preferred partnership model.
After reviewing and evaluating the submitted information, BGMEA will prepare profiles of suitable factories and share them with OCAB. This mechanism is expected to create a practical business matchmaking platform between Bangladeshi factory owners and prospective Chinese investors.
BGMEA believes that the initiative will help revive closed or financially distressed factories by injecting new capital, advanced technologies, and international partnerships. It is also expected to accelerate investment in Bangladesh’s backward linkage industry, strengthen the supply chain, and enhance the country’s capacity to produce higher-value apparel products.
BGMEA has invited interested factory owners and potential investors to submit their detailed proposals via email at investment@bgmea.com.bd.
