Bangladesh’s ready-made garment (RMG) industry is currently facing several major challenges, including the ongoing energy crisis, rising production costs, labour law implementation, and the country’s upcoming graduation from Least Developed Country (LDC) status. In a recent Buyers Forum meeting held at the H&M Bangladesh office, BGMEA President Mahmud Hasan Khan shared his views and concerns regarding the future of the industry and the steps needed to maintain Bangladesh’s global competitiveness.
On the Energy Crisis
“The ongoing energy crisis and rising utility costs are creating serious pressure on apparel manufacturers. Factories are facing operational difficulties due to high energy expenses and supply disruptions. Sustainable solutions are essential to keep the industry competitive in the global market.”
On Bangladesh’s LDC Graduation
“Bangladesh’s graduation from LDC status is undoubtedly a proud achievement for the nation. However, the transition must be smooth and strategically managed to protect export competitiveness and maintain trade benefits for the apparel sector.”
On Support from International Buyers
“We have requested international brands and buyers to support the extension of Bangladesh’s LDC trade benefits and to consider the increasing operational costs faced by manufacturers.”
On Labour Law Implementation
“The implementation of the newly gazetted Bangladesh Labour Law reflects the industry’s commitment to responsible business practices, workers’ welfare, and sustainable growth.”
On the Future of Bangladesh’s RMG Industry
“Despite global challenges, Bangladesh’s apparel industry continues to demonstrate resilience and strong potential. Through collaboration among manufacturers, buyers, and policymakers, we believe the sector will continue to strengthen its global position.”
